Fire Prevention Week Is Over — Your Compliance Checklist Shouldn't Be
Fire Prevention Week wrapped up October 10th, and if your facility ran through its annual drill and called it done, it's worth a second look. Compliance isn't a one-week event — it's an ongoing procurement responsibility, especially for public buildings and gaming facilities where occupancy loads and emergency egress requirements are strictly regulated.
A few things worth confirming before year-end:
Fire suppression systems — Inspection tags current? Extinguishers in ADA-compliant, code-required locations?
Emergency signage and lighting — Exit signage should be visible, illuminated, and battery-backed in case of power loss.
Egress hardware — Panic bars, door releases, and clear pathways aren't just safety features — they're inspection line items.
For gaming venues especially, high occupancy combined with complex floor layouts makes egress compliance a recurring audit risk. And for public sector facilities, fire code violations can delay occupancy certificates or trigger funding holds.
Fire Prevention Week is a reminder, not a deadline. The real work is making sure your procurement calendar has these items on it year-round, not just in October.
